ABOUT THE CLUB
Smithfield RSL Cricket Club actively promotes sportsmanship and fair-play. We value the true spirit of the game of cricket. We’re a community that takes great pride in playing and nurturing young and growing players of the great team game. Our coaches, players, volunteers, and all members of the club encourage friendship, fairness and equality on an off the field.
Part of the Fairfield-Liverpool Cricket Association, fielding both senior and junior teams. We are one of the oldest clubs in the district, dating back over 50 years with around 100 players and members.
Junior Cricket matches are played on Saturday mornings, generally starting at 8:30am and finishing at about 12:30. All teams from the Under 10s and above use leather balls, pads, helmets and all the equipment similar to seniors. Under 9s use soft balls and modified rules.
Senior Cricket is played by adults on Saturday afternoons. Many of Smithfield RSL Cricket Club juniors graduate to the senior teams. In2Cricket/Milo Cricket is for young players who wish to learn the basics of cricket while having lots of fun. It is played at Brenan Park, Smithfield several times each season. Girls can also play in the junior competition.
VOLUNTEERING
As with all other clubs in this (and most other) local sporting associations, Smithfield RSL Cricket Club is a community-based volunteer organisation. Coaches, managers, scorers, age co-ordinators and committee members are parents who have put their hands up so the kids can have a game. Without the assistance of parents/guardians, the club will grind to a halt, and unfortunately no-one will get to play cricket. We urge you to volunteer so your child and others can enjoy playing cricket. Everyone has something to give! The Club will help train parents for umpiring and coaching, but there are very many jobs that require no formal training – from scoring or managing a team, to helping with club communication.
TRAINING
All teams will practice once a week; some teams may choose to practice twice a week. Training nights are usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 5pm at Brenan Park. Training usually involves fielding and catching drills, net sessions, and batting and bowling sessions on the main oval.
GEAR
Smithfield RSL CC team shirt and hat are provided to all players. However, we recommended that players have their own gear – especially as the age groups advance. In order of importance, that would be: protector, helmet, bat, gloves, pads. Having their own equipment also means a player can practice outside formal practice sessions.
